Reflecting on Hope, Collaboration and Connection at Urban Coast Institute's 20th Anniversary

Earlier this month, our Public Policy & Justice Organizer had the privilege of attending the Urban Coast Institute’s 20th Anniversary Panel and Luncheon at Monmouth University—a gathering of minds, hearts and visions committed to the future of our coastal and marine ecosystems.

The panel featured voices from across sectors: science, advocacy, academia and government. Waterspirit attended this event with experience advocating to prevent deep sea mining for rare earth minerals, particularly at the United Nations. Unfortunately, the fight to stop deep sea mining is now a national issue for Americans. Congress needs to hear from residents that deep sea mining risks releasing toxic plumes that could spread across ocean currents, poisoning marine ecosystems and fisheries that billions depend upon for food. To that end, please sign our letter to your congressional representatives here.

What stood out most to her during the day was not only the depth of the policy discussions, but the human moments that reminded us why we do this work in the first place. She left deeply moved by the conversations and the emotional honesty shared throughout the day. One of the most striking moments came when the panelists were asked what motivates their work. One panelist, Deerin Babb-Brott paused, visibly moved, and then cried as he spoke of his daughters and the hope he holds onto for their future. It was a powerful reminder that our environmental work is deeply personal and that acknowledging our grief, hope and fear is not a weakness—it is a vital part of the work.

She was especially inspired by student speaker—a Northern NJ native— and current president of the Monmouth University LOVE BLUE club, whose leadership and passion already show that the next generation is ready to meet the challenges ahead. Her voice reflected a deep sense of place, commitment to local action, and the joy of building community around what we love.

It is clear that collaboration across sectors is essential. We need each other. We must bring our full selves to the table, including the parts of us that feel overwhelmed or afraid, as well as the parts that still dare to hope.

A heartfelt thank you to Waterspirit Board Member, Marguerite Stocker, whose invitation made it possible to attend, connect and reconnect with so many passionate dedicated people.
