Across faiths and traditions, we unite in the sacred responsibility to protect water. Yet again, in the Northeast region, our waters and communities face severe threats from fossil fuel infrastructure — including pipelines, compressors, and the false promises of thirsty hydrogen solutions. In these moments, our long-haul commitment to water protection must remain steadfast.
The NJ Green Amendment (SCR43/ACR119) continues to guide our vision — a constitutional right to clean air, water, and a healthy environment for current and future generations. Learn more and take action here.
Last week, environmental injustice reared its head with the approval of a fourth dirty gas and hydrogen plant in Newark's Ironbound community — a predominantly low-income and minority neighborhood already burdened with pollution. For over five hours, residents spoke truth to power, urging leaders to act with courage. That same day, we raised our voices in unified resistance to the NESE pipeline proposal.
The Williams Transco Company is once again seeking to revive the NESE pipeline project — including a potential compressor station along Route 206 in Franklin, NJ. These permits expired on May 3, 2024, after both New York and New Jersey denied critical water quality permits in 2020. Yet Williams aims to reapply as early as August 29, 2025.
Let us be clear:
· The NESE pipeline offers no public benefit to New Jersey.
· It would send all energy out of state, leaving us with polluted air, contaminated water, and decades more dependence on methane, a climate super-pollutant.
· This is a direct affront to our health, climate, and future — and a betrayal of our moral and spiritual duty to protect sacred Earth.
As Pope Francis reminds us in Laudato Si', "The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all." Expanding fossil fuel infrastructure during a climate crisis is a failure of leadership and a rejection of justice.
Last Thursday night, the people of Franklin Township unanimously passed a resolution against this project — and now we must ensure that NESE stays buried for good.
