Water is sacred and we are water. The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and high density data center infratructure across New Jersey is triggering sever public alarm as its environmental costss spill over into local watersheds. Nowhere was this risk more clear than Secaucus, where a computer error at an Equinix data center triggered a 5,500-gallon diesel fuel spill into Anderson Creek, a crucial tributary of the Hackensack River. Speaking on WBAI this morning, Captain Bill Sheehan of Hackensack Riverkeeper highlighted how these massive facilities present immediate hazards to fragile aquatic ecosystems while quietly locking the state into heightened reliance on dirty fracked gas and immense grid loads. Similar grassroots pushback is erupting statewide: in Kenilworth, residents are fighting a $1.8 billion AI facility built on the former Merck site over water, noise and energy strains. In Vineland, a massive 45-acre buildout is drawing heavy community resistance over local resources and noise pollution.
Given these hyper-scale facilities consume millions of gallons of freshwater daily for cooling and demand unyielding baseline electricity—predominantly supplied by dirty fossil fuel—public urgency for a statewide moratorium is mounting. While several municipalities are attemption to use local home-rule zoning to block developments, loop-holes contnue to leave communities vulnerable. In Holmdel, where a data center proposal was submitted at the historic Bell Works site prior to a municipal ban, residents have organized a grassroots movement to demand the application be withdrawn. Concerned residents can support this effort by signing the local petition organized by SHIELD. Without a comprehensive halt on new construction and independent regulation of existing business practices, New Jersey’s freshwater reserves and climate goals remain directly threatened by the unchecked, enabled industry.
