Proposed Fossil Fuel Pipeline Threatens Bayshore Area with Toxins, Habitat Destruction, and Air Pollution
LOCAL GROUPS AND LEADERS URGE Governor Murphy to Deny the Permits, AGAIN
Who: Waterspirit, Food and Water Watch, New Jersey League of Conservation Voters, NJ Sierra Club, Surfrider Foundation, rethink energy NJ, NY/NJ Baykeeper, Clean Ocean Action, and multiple NJ elected officials.
What: Press conference and rally urging Governor Murphy to use his power to deny the
proposed Williams Transco Northeast Supply Enhancement Project (NESE) again.
Where: Bayshore Waterfront Park: 13 Main Street, Port Monmouth, NJ 07758 (Main Street Lot). Rain Location: 200 Port Monmouth Rd, Port Monmouth, NJ 07758
When: Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 4:00-6:00 pm (rain location available). Press Conference at 4:30 pm.
Why: In May 2025, Williams-Transco revived their permit applications for the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) project to Governor Murphy’s NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). The construction of the project rests on the Governor’s approval. These permits have been previously denied due to the significant environmental harm and lack of need. In recent weeks, 19 towns – including 100% of Bayshore communities – have passed resolutions opposing the construction of the NESE project. The importance of water protection has never been more clear.
NESE is an unnecessary, dirty, and environmentally destructive project designed to bring dirty, deadly fracked gas from Pennsylvania to New York City. To do so, Williams and their subsidiary Transco have sought permits to build both a massive new compressor station in densely populated Franklin Township, and a 23.4-mile offshore pipeline through Raritan Bay. Reports indicate that the compressor station will emit millions of tons of harmful pollutants annually into the air we breathe. The nearly 24-mile pipeline, called the Raritan Loop, will rip Raritan Bay in half and continue all the way to the ocean, spewing nearly a million tons of toxin muck and drilling mud into the waterways in which we swim and fish.
A coalition of environmental, fishing, business and community groups has united to fight the pipeline and is hosting a rally to urge Governor Murphy to deny the permits again. The rally will be held at Bayshore Waterfront Park from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm, and people of all ages are encouraged to attend and bring signs.
