From Knowledge to Protection: Community as a Caregiver

Waterspirit was given information about a local water quality issue in Holmdel that could impact 300,000 residents in Monmouth County reliant upon local drinking water. Naturally we made time to attend the latest related convening, which was a Planning Board level hearing. Often we help translate complex water science into accessible understanding, empowering residents to ask informed questions and advocate effectively. Showing up is an act of collective care and show up, we did.

At last night’s Holmdel Planning Board meeting, residents pressed the applicant’s wastewater expert with pointed questions about the treatment capacity, protection, and risks to local water resources—questions that many felt went unanswered or deflected. Frustration boiled over as residents expressed outrage that the Planning Board did not view itself as a first line of defense against potential water contamination, especially during an ongoing drought. Calls were made for the Township to require an independent wastewater expert, rather than relying solely on the applicant’s consultants.

As a result of the standing room only outcry, the Township Committee has scheduled a special continued meeting on Monday night. Residents are being urged to demand that NJDEP not allow outdated standards—such as reliance on a 1977 era wastewater treatment framework, a 100 foot buffer instead of the required 300 foot buffer, or the siting of a toxic lagoon discharging into Willow Brook. This is in close proximity to a ball field and pickle ball courts. Many speakers emphasized that approving such risks in the name of affordable housing is nonsensical given Holmdel has been meeting its affordable housing obligations. Questions went until 10:25 PM and the public was not yet provided opportunity for public comment. Next up is the Monday, December 22, 2025 Township Committee meeting in Holmdel. From there, Waterspirit will continue to stay connected. Protecting water quality must remain non-negotiable.
