As Drought Tightens Its Grip on New Jersey, Protecting Our Water Has Never Been More Urgent

New Jersey is once again in a precarious position when it comes to water. Much of the state remains under ongoing drought watch, while parts of South Jersey are now facing a drought warning—a sign that our water supplies and ecosystems are under mounting stress. Reservoirs and aquifers are dipping lower, stream flows are weakening, and communities are being asked to reduce water usage at a time when climate volatility continues to accelerate.

Periods of drought remind us of an essential truth we must face square on: water is finite, vulnerable, and indispensable to all life. When water becomes scare, the consequences ripple through every community—especially those already burdened by pollution, industrial activity, and environmental injustice. In moments like this, our policies must align with ecological reality and public need, not corporate convenience.

At this very moment—the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) is considering approval of a dangerous and unnecessary gas infrastructure, recently approving water permits the agency previously denied under the Clean Water Act due to the known impacts to critical waterways and water quality. Nothing about the project has changed and the decision to approve water permits is now being appealed.

If drought teaches us anything, let it be that we cannot keep sacrificing our water for fossil fuel expansion—especially projects that have already been proven to violate clean water protections. Every gallon matters, every tributary matters, every single decision matters.

As we enter lame duck session, the NJ Green Amendment must move forward. With drought intensifying and water protections being tested yet again, the moment is calling for decisive action.
