Announcing Waterspirit’s 2026 “Joys of the Sea” Gala Honorees

Celebrating the power of faith, science and music in protecting our waterways

Long Branch, NJ-November 17, 2025- Waterspirit is thrilled to announce the honorees of its Annual Joys of the Sea Gala, taking place March 14, 2026 at McLoone’s Pier House, 1 Ocean Ave N. Long Branch, NJ 07740, a celebration of spiritual connection to water and bold action on behalf of the Earth’s waters.

This year’s event will honor two remarkable leaders whose life’s work embodies the mission and values of Waterspirit:

·         Dr. Patricia Shanley is a forest ecologist, ethnobotanist and global advocate for Indigenous knowledge and conservation. Dr. Shanley’s groundbreaking work bridges science and community empowerment, bringing global attention to the spiritual and ecological value of Earth’s natural resources. She continues her research and outreach in Brazil through Woods & Wayside International, a nonprofit she co-founded, and trains the next generation of environmental stewards and advocates.

·         Captain Robert Killian, a NJ native currently living in Sarasota County, Florida is a longtime advocate for marine protection and interfaith climate action. He founded the Annual Clearwater Festival at Sandy Hook, Gateway National Seashore, Highlands, NJ. His professional singing career landed him an appearance at Carnegie Hall and on a Grammy winning album. He is co-founder, Captain and Education Director for Aquarian Quest Inc. where he continues inspiring love for marine ecosystems through hands-on environmental education.

“The ocean is both endangered, rapidly warming and sacred. Honoring these two visionary change makers is our way of celebrating the intersection of science, spirit and justice,” said Blair Nelsen, Executive Director of Waterspirit.

The Joys of the Sea Gala is Waterspirit’s signature annual event, bringing together environmentalists, faith leaders, scientists, workers, and community advocates in celebration of our shared commitment to protecting water as sacred gifts. We are currently seeking mission-aligned sponsors from the worlds of ethical business and spiritual ecology. We are grateful to Early sponsors Kate and Bob Chambers, Anne Marie and Bob Reardon, Sue Smith, Eleanor Swanson, and the Thomas Berry Foundation.
